First Event. Ever.
Ended the week with my very own event, the very first under the Root + Petal banner. It went so well, I had to keep stopping and remind myself…yeah. Of course it’s going well? I’ve been doing this for ten years!
I’ve done wedding consultations, set up events, made floral installations on the spot on a time limit with the event planners eyeing us as the wedding party trickled in but we had a few more finishing touches!! Ok, now grab all the supplies and run!!
I’ve dealt with crazy load outs, really bad vendor parking (or none at all looking at you Walt Disney Concert Hall) and elevators I was sure I was going to be entombed in and unearthed centuries later.
All that aside, this event was nice. It was fun, pleasant, and I took pride in this being my very first solo venture.
Since losing my shop in the fire, I’ve been working out of my dining room and it’s really made me miss that little flower shop even more. It was small, one of the smaller flower shops I’ve worked at, but you take for granted all the spaces and countertops that are only for floristry. My dining room….not really for that.
Shears and floral tape right next to bagels and a toaster, stacks of boxes and packaging materials towering over the hutch filled with my moms china and goblets. Tripping over one of my six cats who think I’ve created this flower wonderland for their enjoyment and nothing else. It’s been a struggle Tetris-ing a sudden floral studio into the lived in nooks and crannies of my home.
I was happy with the flowers, happy with the design, and happiest of all that this was all mine. I’m hoping I can get more events over the next few months, perfect the logistics a bit, tighten up the screws and figuring it out as I go along with this new set up. Everyone has been so patient and tolerant of my piles of leaves and stems all over the floor, my hoard of boxes (i love a good cardboard box), and my ever-growing collection of dried flowers spouting up all over the place like they grew out of my hutch next to the cereal.
Yes. It was great, a pure joy to wake up in the morning to my dining room filled with white flowers and tropical greens, to make coffee and enjoy the scent mixed in the roses and peonies. It’s all different but not a bad different.
